Overview

Dronpushpi, also known as Leucas aspera, is a traditional Ayurvedic herb used for centuries to treat respiratory issues, skin problems, fevers, and digestive ailments. All parts of the plant, including the leaves, flowers, roots, and stem, possess medicinal properties.

Respiratory health

  • Coughs and colds: Dronpushpi acts as an expectorant, helping to clear excess mucus from the respiratory tract. It can be prepared as a decoction, a juice from the leaves mixed with honey, or inhaled as a steam vapor to relieve symptoms of coughs and colds.
  • Asthma: The herb's bronchodilator and mucolytic effects can provide relief from asthma and other breathing difficulties.
  • Sinusitis and headache: For sinus-related headaches, two drops of fresh leaf juice can be administered into each nostril on an empty stomach. A paste made from the leaves and flowers can also be applied to the forehead.
Skin and wound care
  • Skin infections: Due to its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and blood-purifying properties, dronpushpi is used to treat skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, scabies, and rashes.
  • Wound healing: A paste of the leaves can be applied to boils, wounds, and cuts. A decoction of the dried plant is also used as a wash for cleaning wounds.
  • Insect bites and stings: In folk medicine, a paste of the leaves or juice extract is applied to bites from insects and scorpions to draw out toxins and reduce swelling.
Digestive system
  • Indigestion: The plant's carminative properties help stimulate digestion and improve appetite. It is used to relieve symptoms of dyspepsia, abdominal pain, and poor digestive fire.
  • Intestinal parasites: Dronpushpi has anthelmintic (deworming) properties and is used to treat worm infestations.
  • Jaundice: In Ayurveda, the herb is considered beneficial for liver disorders like jaundice and is known for its hepatoprotective (liver-protective) effects.
Other traditional uses
  • Fever: As a powerful antipyretic (fever-reducing) agent, a decoction of the whole plant is used to help lower mild fevers.
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain relief: The plant is used to reduce swelling and pain caused by inflammation, such as that from arthritis or rheumatism. This analgesic effect has been supported by animal studies.
  • Gynaecological disorders: The herb is traditionally used to support reproductive health, addressing issues like amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) and dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation).
  • Poisoning and venoms: Historically, dronpushpi juice or a leaf paste was applied to snake bites, though it is not a substitute for professional medical treatment.
  • Insecticide: Dried leaves are burned as an insecticide and mosquito repellent.
