Ashvagandha is a well known herb used in ayurveda. It has been described to rejuvenating and regenerate the worn tissues (rasayana and kshaya-apaha); it boosts the immunity (balya); and it lessens inflammation (shotha-apaha). Research in recent years has found two activities in ashvagandha that protect the joint cartilage – (1) It has a short-term effect to protect the damaged human osteo-arthritic cartilage matrix; and (2) It stops/slows the gelatinase activity of collagenase type 2 enzyme in vitro.
Dugdhika is a medicinal herb that stimulates the metabolic activity in the body and thus helps burn the excess fat in the body. This is important in patients suffering from osteoarthritis as reducing their weight helps improve the health of the weight-bearing joints.
Yashad (zinc) is a well known antioxidant and immuno-modulator.
Mandukparni is a well known ayurvedic herb with several important actions. It has been used as an anti-aging drug (ayushya), rejuvenating and antioxidant (rasayani), a drug to lessen inflammation (shotha-hara) and to correct blood circulation in small vessels (asrajit). Interestingly, research has shown that Asiaticoside – an active principle in Mandukparni is useful in osteoarthritis as it induces human collagen I synthesis through TGFbeta receptor I kinase (TbetaRI kinase)-independent Smad signaling.
Shilajatu is a well known tonic used in ayurveda. It has been used as a tonic to rejuvenate / regenerate (rasayana) the worn out tissues and organs and a drug to lessen inflammation. Research in recent years has reported that Shilajatu has several activities, like – rejuvenating, free radical scavenging, antioxidant, immuno-modulating, anti-inflammatory, and pain relieving. These findings are consistent with the medicinal uses of shilajit as an ayurvedic rasayan (rejuvenator) against oxidative stress and geriatric complaints. All these actions are suggestive of the significant role of shilajatu in the management of degenerative disorders, including osteoarthritis.
Avoid using during pregnancy, children below 6 years, and hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
In addition to CARTOGEN Tablet, the patients suffering from Osteoarthritis may need a medicine to lower the swelling in the joints (LOSWEL Tablet), pain-killer to relieve pain in the joints (DOLID Tablet), local pain reliever for massaging on the affected joint (LOSWEL Oil), medicines to strengthen the bones and surrounding tissues (NUBON Tablet, OSSIE Tablet), general tonic and antioxidant (MINOVIT Tablet).
